The Merchant of Venice Rewrite
The goal for this assignment is to rewrite Act 4 Scene 1 of The Merchant of Venice in a way that applies the information you have learned in class and presents this new information in an approachable manner. Specifically, within their rewrite, each group must address the antisemitic language and actions present within the play/scene in a unique and creative way that demonstrates a deeper understanding of the political atmosphere than the original text. Group members will then present this rewrite to the class by acting out the scene as well as explaining why they made the changes that they did.
A few brief notes on the assignment:
Play rewrites are due at the beginning of class on Day 3 (March 16) of the Unit. This assignment is worth 30 points (1/4 of your overall grade).
A few brief notes on the assignment:
- Each group will be given approx. 15 mins to act out their play rewrite and explain the changes they made to the scene. Going significantly over or under in time may result in a loss of points.
If you find yourself struggling to fill the time allotted, feel free to talk to any of the class leaders for assistance. - Scene rewrites should be written in a play format and written in a way that others might be able to act out your scene.
- Your rewrites are limited only by your own creativity. Some examples of ways to rewrite the text include: rewriting the play to take place in the modern day, adding a character, creating a new solution for the conflict in the scene, etc.
- Feel free to include more than two characters within your scene. If more actors are needed at the time of your presentation, feel free to ask for volunteers or ask the class leaders to read for a character. Just make sure you have enough copies of your script for each actor to use.
